Lexington, NC
Below are pictures of my hometown, Lexington, NC. Lexington is located
in Davidson County in the Piedmont which is in the center of the state of North Carolina. Nearby
large cities include Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. Lexington
is next to Interstate 85, a major highway that runs through the state. Lexington is
a small city with a population less than 18,000. Its primary industries include
furniture and textiles.
Davidson County Courthouse
Typical of small Southern towns, Lexington built a courthouse on the "square"
which is the center of downtown where the two principal streets (Main and Center)
cross. No left turns are permitted at this road crossing. Note the clock on the top which is in working order today. Also note
the spelling of "County" (spelled Covnty) and "Court House" (spelled Covrt Hovse) above the entrance. I took this
picture early the morning of 2 January 2005. Notice the Christmas decorations.
A more modern courthouse was built many years ago a few blocks away on Center Street.
Below is a drawing by Chip Holton of Lexington showing the old courthouse on the
"square".
View of Downtown Lexington from the Air
This picture shows the city from the air. I took this picture in 1982 from
a small single engine plane. You can see Main Street running from the lower left
to the upper right. You can see the courthouse near the center and you can also
see the steeples of the First Methodist and First Baptist churches. Also
you can see the Southern Railway train tracks that run through the town with
some of the furniture companys along side.
Pig Sculpture Made of Sand
This is a sculpture made of sand that was constructed for the 2003 Barbecue
Festival held in downtown Lexington. Lexington is famous in the Piedmont region
for its barbecue pork. People come from miles around to eat this barbecue and
the festival is an opportunity for visitors to sample the barbecue, listen to
music, and purchase souveniers. Over 100,000 people typically attend this annual
October event.
Pig Statue
Because Lexington is a "barbecue town," there are several statues of pigs placed
around the town. Below is one such statue located on the "square." The pigs are singing
Christmas carols.
