Miscellaneous Pictures

Below are some pictures of miscellaneous things that you may find interesting.

Transit of Venus

Above is a picture of the Transit of Venus across the sun that I took at approximately 1800 Central Time on 5 June 2012. Venus is the large dark spot in the upper right of the sun disk. You can also seen several sunspots below and to the left of Venus.

Rose

Above is a picture of a red rose I took in May 2007. The rose is in my back yard.

Yellow Flowers

The above is a picture of flowers I took in March 2009 at my new house.

Cardinal

I took the pictue of the Cardinal above in November 2009 through a window in my new house. The bird kept trying to attack my window. I suppose he sees himself in the glass and thinks there is another bird in his domain.

Deer Tracks

The picture above shows deer tracks in my driveway after a snow on 7 January 2010. The tracks were noted going from my back yard that adjoins a wooded area to across the street that is another wooded area but is a mountain bluff.

Lunar Eclipse

Above is a photograph of the November 2003 Lunar Eclipse as seen in Huntsville, AL. I took this photograph with my digital camera with a telephoto converter lens attached all mounted on a tripod. I cropped the larger image to produce the smaller image shown here. This view is near totality. You can see the moon is almost totally orange colored.

Below is a photograph of the October 2004 Lunar Eclipse as seen in Huntsville, AL.

Moon

Below is a picture of the full moon taken on 17 October 2005. I took this picture with my new 8 megapixel Olympus E-300 digital camera with telephoto lens and tele-adapter.

Solar Eclipse

The pictures above of the near total solar eclipse were made in the spring of 1970 in my hometown of Lexington, NC. They were made using my 2-inch refractor telescope by projecting the image on a large sheet of paper. The image on the left was made shortly after the eclipse began. The image on the right was made near totality.

Comet Hale-Bopp

This picture shows Comet Hale-Bopp as seen in Huntsville, AL in the spring of 1997. I digitized this 35 mm image using my digital camera. You can see the comet in the center of the picture just above the roof line of my house. I had to take this picture from my back yard in order to use my house to block out the street light in front of my house. You can see an antenna on the roof and an antenna tower in the picture. The comet was visible in the western sky for many months that year.

Ice on Faucet

Yes, it does snow and become cold in Huntsville. This is a picture of a faucet in my back year covered with ice. This 35 mm image was digitized using my digital camera.

Flowers

This is a picture of flowers I took many years ago. I digitized this image from a 35 mm slide using my digital camera.

Squirrel

This is a picture of a squirrel taken through a window.

Below is another picture of a squirrel sitting on the railing of my deck.

Turtle

The picture above is of a turtle I took one morning. He crawled across my driveway and into the grass where I took this picture.

Raccoon

The picture above is of a raccoon that was on my sidewalk one evening.

Frog

The picture above is of a small frog that I found on my front porch railing early one morning.

Rattlesnake

The picture above is of a rattlesnake I killed in my driveway on 11 August 2013. I first hit it with the flat end of a spade shovel and that apparently hurt him as he did not move much, but it got his rattles going. After a while he started moving off and I hit him with the sharp end of the spade and that got his rattles going again but that did him in.

Deer

The picture above, taken with my cellphone and enlarged, shows a doe with one its two fawns nursing in my back yard. I took this picture on 10 October 2015. The three deer are living in the unimproved section of my back yard. For several days, I saw them back there and when I would drive up in my driveway, the fawns would scamper back into the foliage. One evening as I drove up my driveway in the dark, the doe was standing in my front yard next to the driveway and ran off as I came up the driveway. Below is another picture of the doe and fawn.

The picture below shows another fawn in my back yard and its mother (in the woods in my back yard). I took this picture with my cellphone on 22 September 2018.

Below is a picture of a deer "family" I took on one of the roads about 1 mile from my house.

Below is a picture of a deer that visited my backyard in September 2020. I took the picture with my cellphone through a window. The deer could see me through the window.

Below are pictures a deer in my back yard in January 2023. The deer stayed a long time to graze and another larger deer joined in to also graze. Also below is a video of the smaller deer eating. Click on the last image to play the video. The day was quite foggy and as such, the images and video are somewhat hazy.

The deer visited again a few days later:

And in early February 2023, a buck deer was stalking a doe in my back yard as shown below.

The two deer stayed apart and barely moved for a long time. In fact, the buck decided to lie down and watch the doe for a long time as shown below.

And the deer kept returning in February 2023. The deer like to eat ivy growing in one of the trees in my back yard.

Christmas Cactus Plant

This is a Christmas Cactus plant I have. I took this picture around Christmas 2005. Below is another picture of the cactus plant.

The picture above shows hailstones from a stormy night on Friday, April 7, 2006 . The largest hailstones were about 1 inch in diameter. The hail made a thunderous racket as they hit the roof at about 10:30 PM. These hailstones were blown onto my front porch.

The picture above shows hail from another storm that occurred on Thursday, April 20, 2006, only 13 days after the the first hailstorm of the season. While the hailstorm on 7 April lasted as short while, the hailstorm on 20 April lasted over 7 minutes. I took the picture above in my front yard shortly after the storm ended. My front yard was almost entirely covered with these hailstones with the largest stones 1 inch in diameter.

The picture above is from a hailstorm on 8 August 2008. The hail fell immediately before the rain started and the hailstorm did not last long. But the hailstones were large - about the size of a quarter.

The picture above is sunrise on the morning of 23 August 2008.

Below is a picture of the sunset from my new house. This picture was taken the evening of 14 February 2009. You can see the curve of the Tennesse River in the picture.

Below is a picture of a piece of wheat bread that I was going to make a sandwich out of. The holes in the bread, created by excess yeast that causes extra air bubbles to form, are arranged such that the bread resembles a face.

Below are pictures of several images I captured off of television during the Apollo moon mission era. I captured these images live from a 25-inch Motorola color TV using a 35 mm camera in January -Feburary 1971. I digitized these images using my Olympus C-5050 Zoom 5 Mega pixel digital camera.
