1938 Philco Model 38-15

This is a 1938 Philco Model 38-15. Frequency coverage is 540 to 1720 kc (Standard Broadcast) and 5.7 to 18.0 mc (shortwave). This radio is quite small and is the "cousin" to the Philco Model 38-12, AM only, radio I have.

When I received this radio, the finish on the wood case was quite bad but the wood itself was in good shape. The grill cloth was not original; however the cardboard that mounted the original grill cloth was there. The chassis was also quite dirty. The radio would play but it had a loud hum indicating the filter capacitors were bad. In addition, the dial cord was broken and the speaker has some tears in the paper cone and rattled on occasion. I cleaned the chassis and replaced the filter capacitors, leaving the original capacitor cans in place on the top of the chassis to preserve the original appearance. I also restrung the dial cord using the original tension spring that was inside the radio. I glued the speaker tears and reglued the cone to the center of speaker. The radio plays well with no speaker rattle and is quite sensitive receiving many stations on Standard Broadcast and shortwave.

I refinished the radio, replaced the grill cloth with a reproduction, and the result is the photo above.

This radio uses the same tube compliment as the Model 38-12.
